TATONKA – a German outdoor brand and family-run company
„At Tatonka we develop products for people who enjoy spending time in nature. We do this with passion, imagination and stamina – and with success. “ – Andreas Schechinger, Owner and Managing Director of Tatonka GmbH
The outdoor brand TATONKA was created and registered globally in 1993. Shortly after that, in 1994, the family-run business Mountain Sport GmbH, founded in 1980, was renamed Tatonka GmbH. We are the only outdoor manufacturer to fabricate all of our own products ourselves in a fully transparent manner – for over 30 years now.
The outdoor brand TATONKA: the Bavarian Bison
In the language of the Sioux, TATONKA means bison. The idea for our brand name comes from the ever-popular film “Dances with Wolves”. For Native Americans, the bison is still a holy animal. For us it is a symbol of nature, freedom, wilderness and strength. But it also stands for much more. It is a herd animal with determination and a will of its own. As an outdoor brand, these are characteristics that we truly identify with.
Tatonka GmbH: a German family-run company
Tatonka GmbH is a family-run business with its headquarters in Dasing near Augsburg. We have a flat hierarchy in the company, short and effective decision-making processes, and personal contact with our employees and customers. Tatonka’s Dasing facility houses our development department, management and the distribution warehouse. Our products are manufactured in our proprietary factories in Vietnam. Tatonka GmbH has roughly 1,000 employees worldwide.
Andreas Schechinger is the second generation of managing directors from the family.
Our proprietary manufacturing: everything from one source
Our products are developed in Dasing and manufactured in our own facilities in Vietnam. The company’s first proprietary manufacturing plant was built in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in 1989. It was set up according to European production standards and the Vietnamese employees were trained accordingly. High social standards were a priority from the very beginning. Capacity at the production facility has been continuously expanded along with the size of the factory. Today we manufacture our products at two Mountech Co. Ltd. Facilities: Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Dinh Province.
By producing our own goods we can oversee the manufacturing process from start to finish and, if required, intervene to make any necessary changes and quickly drive new development.
Transparent manufacturing: Seeing it yourself creates trust
As a company, we take responsibility for our employees – in both Germany and Vietnam. In our Open Factory at Mountech Co. Ltd. in Ho Chi Minh City, anyone who is interested can have a personal look at the social accountability that we assume in terms of our employees in Vietnam. Once a week the factory doors are open for visitors. For more information about our Open Factory program go to www.openfactory.tatonka.com.
Certificates for social responsibility: We work in a proven sustainable manner
Since 2011, our Mountech Co. Ltd. factory has been certified according to the globally recognized social standard SA8000, which confirms our accountability as an employer. 2011, MADE BY, a European not-for-profit organization, confirmed that the company reached 100% of the stipulated social standards. The SA8000 certification is inspected twice a year and renewed after three years, the most recent renewal coming in 2020.
Our products: Just being the best is not enough
We only use the best-quality materials from well-known sub-suppliers that we have worked with for years. That allows us to not only retain our high standards for quality but also jointly develop new materials. We insist on the best workmanship because when we put our name on a product we want to be sure you can count on it.
Getting a durable product: repairing not discarding
We run a robust repair service at our headquarters in Dasing. We have everything in stock here, from buckles to tent poles, and the three-person team makes sure that even your older Tatonka products are professionally rebuilt for you. Our motto: A broken zipper is nowhere near reason enough to throw away a Tatonka backpack.
Our philosophy: Responsibility, fairness, honesty
The foundation of responsible company leadership is fairness and honesty. It’s not always the easiest way to do things, of course, because there are sometimes difficult truths to face. Yet we stand behind what we say – always. We are a lively company with a critical attitude and a keen awareness of the future. We respond to challenges, put our decisions to the test, and constantly push ourselves forward. For example, we want to work in an even more sustainable way on both the commercial side as well as on the ecological side of our business.
It’s a tall order, but we’re staying the course.
